Samskriti, a Sanskrit word meaning ‘cultural tradition’, was founded in 1995 with the mission, and vision, of becoming an effective cultural conduit between the East and the West, by presenting high caliber performances of Indian dance, music and theatre by renowned artists from India and other parts of the world. Samskriti has also produced, commissioned, and presented cross-cultural collaborations between Indian artists and their counterparts from Africa, Mexico, Egypt, the Middle East, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Colombia, at venues such as the Wortham Center, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts and the Miller Outdoor Theatre. In addition to performances, Samskriti is Houston’s only ethnic organization to have conducted seven international conferences on Indian dance, arts and crafts, architecture and cultural history, four of them in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, University of Houston’s College of Liberal Arts, and the Asia Society. Samskriti has been fortunate to receive grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and the Miller Theatre Advisory Board, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
