HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! It’s Zine Fest Houston’s 30th Anniversary Festival, and we can’t wait to celebrate with everyone once again at The Orange Show for Visionary Art! In addition to nearly 200 zine vendors, there will once again be a variety of unique programming including workshops, talks, and more – all oriented towards the DIY and mutually supportive culture of zine-making!

Zine Fest Houston is FREE TO ALL, but please be aware that the festival has a zero tolerance policy for sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, or any other forms of discrimination and abuse taken against members of our community such as theft of money or property, physical, verbal, or mental abuse, sexual harassment, inappropriate/unwelcome comments and behaviors, disruptive or disrespectful behavior, and causing a participant or attendee to feel distressed or unsafe. We encourage everyone participating and attending to help us hold the festival up to the standard we have set, and to advise festival organizers if any issues arise in this regard during ZFH. ZFH ORGANIZERS

Patrick Brooks (he, him) is a Houston-based zine designer/publisher. His primary focus is a family-friendly invitational zine, hey everybody… Let’s make a zine! which he produces with his son, Davis. He has also created a zine for Aurora Picture Show’s twentieth anniversary, four editions of an activist zine targeted towards saving the River Oaks Theatre and various one-off projects.

Maria Heg is a cartoonist, illustrator, and an organizer with ZFH. She enjoys early music, yelling online, petting cats, and eating arepas. @ohdonteven on IG

Ruslan Kalitin is a Russian Houston-based indie * introspective cartoonist. He draws zines, comic books and graphic novels, using watercolor and ink techniques.

Anastasia “Stacy” Kirages (she/her) is a Houston-based collage artist, zinester, and community organizer for ZFH. She earned her M.Ed in Reading Education through Texas Woman’s University and currently teaches in the Photo & Digital Media Department at the University of Houston. Ruben Ramires (he/they) is a Portuguese multidisciplinary artist based in Houston, Texas, USA. His diverse work includes illustrations, poetry and acting. Ruben is currently working towards his BA in Illustration at Falmouth University.

FEATURED ARTIST

Lauren Ibañez has a B.F.A in Studio Arts from the University of Texas in Austin, focusing her practice on illustration and printmaking. Influenced by comic books, silent films, and folklore, she creates artwork to invoke empathy and suspense. A focal point in her art deals with storytelling and exploring illustration as a narrative language. Whether composing animated editorial pieces for NPR’s Next Generation Radio, or crafting handheld zines for the next artist market, she is constantly using her work to craft entertaining tales.

Lauren’s artistic style translates seamlessly between her digital work and her traditional work, and many times she utilizes both mediums when working on a project. She has experience in multiple disciplines of printmaking such as screen printing, lithography, relief printing, and risography.

Her outside interests include learning about space travel, listening to spooky podcasts, and keeping a live plant and fish aquarium.

ABOUT ZFH

Zine Fest Houston (ZFH) is an annual, all-ages festival dedicated to promoting zines (self-published magazines), mini-comics, and other forms of small press, alternative, and underground DIY media and art. Admission is always free and low cost table space is made available for creators, writers, and artists involved in the creation, publication, distribution, or promotion of alternative DIY media. ZFH is the sole event in Houston that specifically provides a platform for emerging and established regional and national zine makers in the DIY community to exchange new work and create meaningful relationships that lead to productive collaboration.
