Women of the Brass Band World

November 24 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

The Magnolia City Brass Band, with support from the Houston Arts Alliance, is proud to celebrate female composers and performers from the world of exhilarating brass band music with this upcoming performance in the superb acoustics at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

This concert’s musical highlights will include groundbreaking composer Imogen Holst’s lively and tuneful The Unfortunate Traveller,
as well as Dorothy Gates’ arrangements of “Be Still,” Sibelius’ stirring anthem to Finlandia, and Ennio Morricone’s emotional cinematic theme Gabriel’s Oboe. A stellar quartet of women from the Band, as well as flügelhornist Audrey Foster will be among this concert’s featured performers. Cornettists Lydia Hanje and Sarah Perkins, Deborah Harvey on tenor horn, and our solo euphonium, Anne Wertz, will demonstrate their formidable abilities in Philip Sparke’s Concerto Grosso. Ms. Foster will showcase the beautiful lyricism of Gabriel’s Oboe, and shine in “Alladale” from Sparke’s Hymn of the Highlands. Also spotlighted this evening will be Peter Graham’s exciting Gaelforce, and Leos Janaçek’s “Sokol” fanfare from Sinfonietta.
