Unveiling Gulfton’s Newest Murals

April 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

The Hillcroft St. corridor, already transformed with bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and a new stop light at Dashwood, is now further enhanced by the vivid stories painted on its retaining walls. Through a collaboration between Connect Community and UP Art Studio, three remarkable murals have been brought to life, each a celebration of the diverse cultural tapestry of Southwest Houston.

The artists, Brenda Chapa, Sims, and Santiago Perez, will be presenting their murals at this event. They were carefully chosen by a selection panel comprised of community members, ensuring that the voices and preferences of the locality were heard and represented. Each artist brought their unique narrative and vision to the project, deeply influenced by their personal journeys and cultural backgrounds. Brenda Chapa’s mural draws from her Mexican roots and her life in Houston’s Southwest side, encapsulating the vibrant community spirit. Sims, with his graffiti and pop art-inspired style, infused his work with bold colors and dynamic forms, echoing the energy of the area. Santiago Perez, blending his Colombian heritage with his experiences in Houston, created a piece that vibrates with color and life, symbolizing the diversity and unity of the community.

What sets this project apart is not just the artistic talent but the engagement of the Greater Sharpstown and Gulfton communities in the creative process. The designs for the murals were voted on by the community through an online survey, allowing residents to have a direct hand in shaping their neighborhood’s aesthetic. This inclusive approach ensured that the murals reflected the collective heart and soul of the people, making the Hillcroft corridor not just a route through the city, but a destination in itself, rich with stories and splendor.

Funded by the City of Houston via a Houston Arts Alliance grant and maintained by the Southwest Management District, these murals stand as a testament to the power of art in forging community identity and pride. They not only beautify the space but serve as a beacon of collective creativity and unity, welcoming all who travel through the Hillcroft St. corridor to pause and appreciate the beauty of diversity and the strength of community bonds.
