Performing The Radical Imagination, sponsored by The Catastrophic Theatre

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to perform freedom—not just read about it, talk about it, dream about it, or hope for it, but to embody it?

The workshop is created and facilitated by Candice D’Meza–the Houston based multidisciplinary artist, actor, and playwright of the 2023 world premier Afrofuturist theater production “A Maroon’s Guide To Time and Space”, a Houston Press Theatre Award Best New Play finalist and which was called “A Marvel of Afrofuturism” by the Houston Chronicle. The production reimagines the historical figure Harriet Tubman as a trans-dimensional time traveler, gaining information from the multiverse that will help her liberate herself and others. D’Meza and The Catastrophic Theatre have paired again for a workshop that invites others into their own firsthand exploration of creating performance centered around liberation and freedom.

Performing The Radical Imagination, is a 3-hour workshop designed for those of us ready to explore liberation as a living, breathing, creative act. We’ll use texts from powerful freedom makers to inspire and co-create performances that express our visions of sovereignty, personal power, and collective healing.

In this workshop, you’ll:

Collaborate & Create: Work with others to devise original performances that express freedom and resistance.

Explore Your Sovereignty: Deepen your connection to your own power through personal reflection and artistic exploration.

Perform Liberation: Engage in a creative practice that transforms liberation into an artistic, communal, and personal experience.

This workshop is for anyone interested in engaging with art and history in new and freer ways.
