Please join us on Saturday, October 19 at McClain Gallery for a presentation and discussion of Nick Vaughan & Jake Margolin’s recently completed monumental Wind Drawing: Montrose (3 Views), commissioned for the Bush Intercontinental Airport. The artists will share the colorful queer histories that inspired the work, their unique process of creating the triptych, and their upcoming projects further exploring Houston’s vibrant queer culture. The talk will be accompanied by images and video and will be about 40 minutes long. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session.
Montrose (3 Views) was created by stenciling vibrant pink dry pigment on enormous pieces of paper and then blowing the pigment away. Based on original photographs, each piece depicts Houston’s skyline as seen through plants and trees growing at three historically and personally significant locations in the city’s LGBTQ+ enclave, the Montrose. This work is an extension of a series of monumental charcoal powder Wind Drawings made by Nick and Jake between 2019 and 2022 for their solo exhibition Wayfinding at the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston.
This project was commissioned by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs on behalf of the Houston Airport System for the George Bush Intercontinental Airport through the City of Houston’s Civic Art Program and Houston Arts Alliance.
