About Copycat
From humble beginnings in Houston’s Fifth Ward to the glamorous heights of Manhattan, designer Victor Costa has seen it all. An inspiring tale of ambition and resilience, Costa recounts his extraordinary journey in his new memoir, Copycat. Celebrated (and sometimes criticized) as “the greatest copyist in the world,” Costa’s story is a vivid testament to his lifelong passion for haute couture, always fabulous, and a little bit naughty!
Beginning his artistic journey at just ten years old, Costa spent countless hours sketching women’s clothing, and by sixteen, he was already crafting prom dresses. Driven by his dreams, he ventured to New York, where he first found his footing in bridalwear. However, destiny intervened when a company specializing in “line for line” copying of couture designs enlisted him as a womenswear designer. Over the next five decades, Costa became synonymous with affordable elegance, creating stunning designs that mirrored high fashion, all while maintaining his unique artistic flair.
Copycat is more than just a chronicle of professional achievements; it is a heartfelt exploration of Costa’s personal life, filled with humor and introspection. He candidly shares his experiences, from marrying and divorcing his high school sweetheart to navigating complex relationships with both women and men. As his successful clothing company faced scandal and bankruptcy, Costa’s resilience was tested. Yet, in an unexpected twist, love found him once again in the later chapters of his life.
This memoir not only celebrates Costa’s incredible career but also serves as an inspiring narrative of perseverance, creativity, and the transformative power of love.
