The award-winning Houston Youth Symphony (HYS) culminates its 2023/24 Season with its Spring Concerts, featuring all five youth orchestras, at Stude Concert Hall at Rice University on Sunday, May 5, 2024.
Spring Concert I, beginning at 2:30 PM, features Debut String Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Sinfonia orchestras. The program includes Cinema Paradiso by Ennio Morricone, Sinfonia IV in C minor by F. Mendelssohn, and Edward Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite.
Spring Concert II, beginning at 7:00 PM, features the two most advanced HYS orchestras, the Philharmonia and Symphony orchestras. The program features the 2023/24 HYS Concerto Competition Winners – Leah Wu (15), bassoon and Chanmin (Joel) Park (15), cello. Bassoonist Leah Wu performs Ciranda das sete notas by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Last summer she participated in the Tanglewood Bassoon Intensive and NYO2, and this summer, she will participate in the National Youth Orchestra, which will tour South America. Chanmin Park performs the first movement of Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat major for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 107. Recently, Chanmin was named winner of 2024 National Young Arts competition and the 2024 Symphony North of Houston Concerto Competition.
