It’s movie night at the Milford House! Join us for pizza and a screening of Strangeness (La stranezza) on Sunday, August 18 in celebration of Ferragosto. What’s more Italian than that?
We will serve wine and soft drinks alongside the pizza. Please note that we do not allow BYOB.
Strangeness
In 1921, Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello wrote Six Characters in Search of an Author, an absurdist play about the relationship among authors, their characters, and theatre practitioners. It premiered at the Teatro Valle in Rome to a mixed reception, to say the least, with shouts from the audience of “Manicomio!” (“Madhouse!”). But how did the idea for this groundbreaking work come to Pirandello, who would go on to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature 13 years later? Roberto Andò imagines the answer to this question in his new film Strangeness starring award-winning actor Toni Servillo (The Great Beauty, The Hand of God).
What is Ferragosto?
Ferragosto is a public holiday in Italy that originates from Feriae Augusti, the festival of Emperor Augustus, who made August 1 a day of rest after weeks of hard work on the agricultural sector. These days, Italians celebrate Ferragosto with a long weekend, heading for the coast or the cool air mountain air to soak up the last days of summer.
