The Book of Joy by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu was an instant best-seller. This class will reflect on the words and practices, outlined by these two great leaders, that help to bring more joy into our lives. We will explore the nature of joy, the obstacles to joy (including anxiety, loneliness, and fear of death), and the “pillars” of joy – qualities such as humility, humor, and forgiveness, which, when practiced, support our intention to find the joyful in everyday life. While it would be impossible to cover all the possible practices in a six-week period, we will learn some of the major practices from the book that address these experiences.
