Navigating American healthcare can be a nightmare. Patients, their families, and providers are suffering, not only with an illness or hospitalization process, but with an industry that often cares more about profits than people. There are stories to be told from both sides of the stethoscope. Whether you’re an experienced writer struggling to structure your personal essay, or have an idea for a memoir but don’t know where to start, this workshop is for you.

Writespace instructor and interfaith chaplain Catherine Vance and Dr. Bassam Zahid, a recent UT McGovern writing fellowship graduate, are teaming up to help you bring your story to life. This workshop will address the question of what exactly medical narratives are and why they are important. Drawing from mentor texts and using generative exercises, Catherine and Bassam will lead a guided exploration of some medical stories that matter, and offer some prompts that will encourage you in writing your own.

This class is not genre specific and welcomes poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction writers.
