Houston architect Ben Koush and San Antonio-based architectural historian Kathryn E. O’Rourke will discuss their forthcoming book, Home, Heat Money, God Texas and Modern Architecture (University of Texas Press, spring 2024). Illustrated with 250 of Koush’s recent photographs of buildings in cities and towns through the state, the book examines modern architecture in Texas from the 1930s through the 1980s. O’Rourke’s text analyzes the maturation of Texas modernism against the backdrop of the state’s rise to national economic and political prominence, and contextualizes the works of leading and lesser-known architects within multiple cultural and social histories of Texas.
Books and Bytes is co-sponsored by the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design and the University of Houston Libraries.
