The astonishing wonders of the Florentine Renaissance range from the writings of poets and humanist philosophers — such as Marsilio Ficino, Angelo Polizano, Leon Battista Alberti, and Pico della Mirandola — to the monumental Quattrocento art and architecture of Fra Angelico, Fra Lippi, Masaccio, Donatello, Brunelleschi, Ghiberti, Botticelli, Michelozzo, and Ghiberti. Join us Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m. for Art and Architecture in Renaissance Florence as we take a fascinating look into some of the city’s most incredible masterpieces.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Dustin Gish, Professor of Humanities as our guest speaker for the event. Dr. Gish will guide us through the “visual rhetoric” of the Florentine Renaissance, as exhibited in some of the most famous works of art from that period: Palazzo Medici, Santa Maria Novella, Brunelleschi’s Duomo, Ghiberti’s Battistero, Michelangelo’s David, and the Grand Hall of the Palazzo della Signoria — artworks that speak volumes about the Renaissance and the Republic of Florence.

About the Presenter
Dustin Gish has been a member of the Honors College faculty at the University of Houston since 2014, teaching the College’s signature course, the Human Situation, as well as courses in political theory. He is also the associate director of Phronêsis, an Honors minor and program in politics and ethics, and the faculty organizer of MindWalks: Honors@MFAH — a co-curricular program for students in the Human Situation course.

Gish received his doctorate in politics from the Institute of Philosophic Studies at the University of Dallas, and his master’s in liberal education from St. John’s College – Santa Fe. He taught previously for many years at The American University of Rome (1999-2006), College of the Holy Cross (2007-2012), and as a visiting professor in the Institute for the Study of the American Constitutional Heritage at the University of Oklahoma (2012-2013) and the Center for American Studies at Christopher Newport University in Virginia (2013-2014). He held a residential fellowship at the International Center for Jefferson Studies and Jefferson Foundation Library at Monticello (2013).
