American Lattice, explores the human process of adapting to a new city. Migration has been a defining aspect of human history, and this piece highlights how we create connections from the familiar to the unfamiliar. Nostalgia plays a key role, shaping how we perceive new street names, landmarks, and neighborhood landscapes as we blend memories of the past with our current surroundings.
The installation uses RGB and CMYK as metaphors for calibrating our perspectives. Through a combination of video and photography, it explores the overlapping layers of perception that shape our experiences, suggesting that the foundational colors of any grayscale or color scale could be rooted and determined by one’s hometown. The piece features imagery from the artist’s childhood home in Pedregal, CDMX, juxtaposed with scenes from her current neighborhood, creating a visual dialogue between past and present.
This project is funded in part by the City of Houston through @houstonartsalliance.
