Inspired by the little and colorful scenes in Mexican nicho boxes for Day of the Dead, artist Tina Hernandez created 3 colorful self-portraits for her latest project Nichos of the Afterlife. This series integrates the artist’s Chicanisma, crafting, prop-making, self-portraiture, and photography. The artist usually creates the scenes for her self-portraits from the waist up, but with this project, Tina was creatively challenged to compose whimsical scenes that expanded the familiar while still imbuing her Chicana style and influence. She also included her mother in one of the scenes. This project is a continuation of the artist delving into her cultural ancestry and incorporating this method of self-discovery into an art-making practice.
