Kirby’s Charcoal Steaks, Dallas’ Original Steakhouse, was owned and operated by B.J. Kirby at the original Greenville Avenue location from 1954 to 1987, when B.J. closed the restaurant and retired. Folks in Dallas remember Kirby’s as the place to go for an anniversary, a first date or any special occasion. The idea of bringing Kirby’s back to Dallas was conceived at a neighborhood gathering, and in 1993, the Ingram family purchased the name and the recipes from their next-door neighbor, B.J. Kirby. The Ingrams and their partners, the Houghs, reopened Kirby’s Steakhouse on Greenville Avenue in the Spring of 1995.The new Kirby’s has been well received by both the public and the press. Kirby’s was awarded “Dallas’s Best Steak” by the Dallas Observer. The Dallas Morning News named Kirby’s one of 1995’s top 10 best new restaurants in Dallas. The Zagat Restaurant Survey placed Kirby’s number one in the “Traditional American Restaurant” category for the Dallas Fort Worth Area.Since reopening, Kirby’s has successfully grown from one restaurant to five three Dallas / Ft.Worth area locations, a location just north of Houston in The Woodlands, and the Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse in the Bricktown area of downtown Oklahoma City. Kirby’s is proud to annouce the opening of their fifth Texas location in the Sone Oak area of San Antonio scheduled to open Summer of 2007. “B.J. looked forward to Kirby’s return to Dallas,” said Mrs Kirby. “While he passed away shortly before the reopening, I know he wished for its success.” Kirby’s is owned and operated by James Ingram and Monte Hough, and they have dedicated their restaurants to the memory of their friend B.J. Kirby. “May his spirit always be with us.”
